90% of all consumers buy for emotional reasons and then justify their decision intellectually.  The other 10% make purchases from a logical or rational position.  With this in mind, it’s best to address people’s emotional desires first then present the logical reasons so they can justify their decision to buy. 

If you are not selling on an emotional level, you’re losing a lot of sales.

Take a look at the five key reasons why people buy.

  1. You’ve heard it before – sex appeal sells!  And so it does.  People will buy because of love or sex appeal.  This can be a very powerful tool when used correctly and tactfully.
  2. People buy because they are looking for an easier way to make money.  If you watch TV late nights or early Saturdays you’ll see this: courses on buying real estate, commodities, starting a business on the Internet, etc.
  3. People buy because they’re getting something for free (For example, the bonuses they receive if they act in the next 30 minutes) or because it’s so cheap they’d have to be dumb not to act.  Free or next to free is a very powerful offer.
  4. People buy because they want to have their dreams fulfilled.  If people believe your product or service will allow them the lifestyle or time to live out their dreams your phone will ring.
  5. People buy out of fear - fear of loss, fear of being left out, fear of rejection.  Fear is a powerful motivator.

You might be thinking your product or service doesn’t fit into any of the above buying influences, but let me shed some light.  I have yet to see a product or service that cannot be positioned to match one of the five listed above.  What you need to do is use as many as possible of these five in your ads, sales letters, TV commercials, or phone scripts.  Let me give you a great hint - look at car ads.  They have mastered the emotional aspects of the five reasons people buy.

5 Ways to Bump Up Your Profits in the Next 30 Days

  1. Make a new expanded special offer to your past and existing clients.  “There’s gold in your database.”  Past clients know you.  They have a comfort level with you.  They trust you!  Consider a new product or service.  Look at offering your clients another company’s wares and taking a percentage.  Design a special package - Create a truly great offer.  One that’s simply too good not to buy.
  2. Look at your past mailings and offers.  Determine which were the most profitable.  Re-mail or reintroduce the same offer that worked before.  Often you can mail a second or third time to the very same list with the very same offer and results will be up to 80% as profitable as the first time.
  3. Take a successful one step letter or ad and turn it into a two or three step promotion.    The extra steps create interest and involvement.  You can often double or triple your profits!
  4. Use risk reversal.  This is possibly the most powerful way to close more sales.  You need to take all, or as much as possible, of the risk out of the transaction for the client.  Make everything you can as risk free as possible.  For example, instead of offering a limited guarantee that’s watered down, make it a “no questions asked” money back guarantee.  Instead of offering a guarantee of just 30 days make an offer of three months, six months or even a year.  We’ve discovered the longer the guarantee, the fewer returns there are.
  5. Make it easy for your customers to buy.  You see the technique used by the Franklin Mint and many other companies.  Just three monthly payments of $39.95 on your credit card and the item is yours.  Offer your prospects some sort of payment plan.  Consider offering a 10% discount if they prepay.
